NBA playoff shock: Orlando Magic stun Detroit Pistons in game one

Orlando magic get upset win over Detroit Piston in game one of NBA Playoffs.

The No. 8 seed Orlando Magic delivered a statement performance on the road, defeating the No. 1 seed Detroit Pistons 112–101 in Game One of their playoff series – an outcome few saw coming.

Many expected Detroit to cruise through the opening round after a dominant regular season, but Orlando had other ideas.

Here, Florida News Blitz Writer Oliver Carter breaks down the Magic’s sensational win and how they achieved it.

Road to the Playoffs

Orlando’s path to the postseason was anything but smooth. After falling short in their bid for the No. 7 seed against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Magic regrouped and emphatically secured their playoff spot with a commanding win over the Charlotte Hornets.

That result locked them into the No. 8 seed—and a daunting matchup against a Detroit team coming off a 60-win season.

The Pistons’ rise has been remarkable. Just two years removed from finishing as the worst team in the league, Detroit surged to a 60–22 record, far exceeding preseason expectations and securing their first No. 1 seed in nearly two decades.

Meanwhile, Orlando fell short of its projected 52 wins. A dip in scoring efficiency from former No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero, combined with injuries, contributed to an inconsistent regular season.

A Statement Start

From the opening tip, the Magic set the tone.

Jalen Suggs ignited the game with a deep three-pointer, sparking an early surge that saw Orlando race out to an 18–5 lead within the first five minutes.

Detroit responded late in the first quarter with a 12–2 run, but Orlando maintained control, closing the period ahead 35–27.

Suggs was electric early, tallying 11 points along with contributions across the stat sheet in just eight minutes. Both Banchero and Cade Cunningham added nine points apiece in the opening frame.

Detroit Fights Back

The second quarter saw a shift in tone, with both teams tightening up defensively.

Detroit began to claw its way back, outscoring Orlando 24–20 in the period to cut the deficit to 55–51 at halftime. Momentum had clearly swung toward the Pistons after Orlando’s explosive start.

The third quarter followed a similar pattern—gritty, physical, and closely contested. Detroit mounted another push with a 13–2 run, trimming the lead to its smallest margin of the night.

However, every time the Pistons threatened, Orlando responded. The Magic edged the quarter 26–23 to take an 81–74 lead into the final period.

Cunningham Carries the Load

In the fourth quarter, Cade Cunningham did everything he could to will Detroit back into the game.

The All-Star guard poured in 16 points in the final frame, showcasing why he has been in MVP conversations this season. But despite his heroics, Detroit’s supporting cast struggled to keep pace.

Orlando’s balanced attack ultimately proved decisive. The Magic controlled the closing minutes and sealed a convincing 112–101 victory on the road.

Final Thoughts

While Cunningham finished with the highest-scoring performance of the playoffs so far, it wasn’t enough to overcome Orlando’s collective effort.

Game One served as a reminder: in the playoffs, seeding means little once the ball is tipped.

Final Score: Orlando Magic 112 – 101 Detroit Pistons
