Miami’s sporting landscape: Professional teams, college teams, F1 and tennis

Miami is home to several professional and college sports teams across various major leagues.

The Miami sports landscape also includes minor league teams, other pro sports, and notable events.

Here, Florida News Blitz gives a detailed rundown of all the teams, sports and events that you can watch or attend in the city.

Professional teams

🏈 Football

Miami Dolphins (NFL) – Play at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

🏀 Basketball

Miami Heat (NBA) – Play at Kaseya Center (formerly American Airlines Arena).

Baseball

Miami Marlins (MLB) – Play at loanDepot park.

Soccer

Inter Miami CF (MLS) – Co-owned by David Beckham, they play in Fort Lauderdale currently, but plan to move to a new stadium in Miami.

🏒 Ice Hockey

Florida Panthers (NHL)

Technically based in Sunrise, FL (just outside Miami), but still considered part of the greater Miami area.

Play at Amerant Bank Arena. Currently one of the top teams in the NHL.

College teams & other events

Miami Hurricanes (University of Miami) – Compete in NCAA Division I (ACC), with teams in football, basketball, baseball, etc.

Minor League Baseball

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp used to be the closest AAA team, but Miami doesn’t currently have a prominent minor league baseball team within city limits (the Marlins handle most of the local baseball scene).

🏈 Arena/Indoor Football

No current arena football team in Miami, but there have been past teams like the Miami Hooters (yes, that was real) in the Arena Football League.

🎾 Tennis

Miami Open

One of the biggest tennis tournaments outside of the Grand Slams.

Held annually at Hard Rock Stadium (converted for tennis).

🏁 Motorsports

Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix

Held at a specially built track around Hard Rock Stadium. Part of the F1 World Championship since 2022.

🥊 Combat Sports

Miami is a hotspot for boxing and MMA. UFC regularly hosts events here.

Local promotions and gyms produce fighters (e.g. Jorge Masvidal is from Miami).

Bare Knuckle FC has also held events here.

🏉 Rugby

Miami Sharks (Major League Rugby)

New team started in the 2024–2025 season. Helping grow rugby’s presence in the U.S.

🏀 Other Hoops

Miami Pro League – A popular summer league featuring local pros, college stars, and overseas players. Not affiliated with the NBA, but big in the culture.
