Berlin Travel News: Seven best things to do in the party capital of Europe

Berlin is a one-of-a-kind city, combining art, culture and a 24-hour party attitude.

Whether you are a history buff or a techno-head, there are more than enough activities to fill a getaway to Germany’s capital city.

Here, Travel News Blitz picks out seven must-dos when visiting the Stone City.

Brandenburg Gate

One of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks, the Brandenburg Gate is a neoclassical monument built on the site of one of the former city gates.

Erected in the 18th century, it once stood as a dividing line between East and West Berlin, but now serves as a reminder of an eagerly forgotten past.

Berlin Wall Memorial

The Berlin Wall divided the city for nearly 30 years. The wall’s memorial provides a look into the city's history, while the East Side Gallery is covered in stunning murals by artists from around the world.

Despite only remnants of the wall remaining, the memorial provides an eerie insight into the division that once plagued Germany’s capital.

Museum Island

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Museum Island is home to five world-famous museums, housing famous artefacts and artwork from around the world.

Art and history lovers will have no problem filling a day in the cultural heart of Berlin.

Reichstag

Housing Germany’s parliament, The Reichstag is a must-visit for those on a cultural vacation to the city.

The political hub features a breathtaking glass dome, designed by architect Norman Foster.

Visitors can walk inside the dome for panoramic views of the city and extremely Instagrammable photo opportunities.

Pro Tip: While entry to the government building is free, booking in advance is required.

Tempelhofer Feld

This former airport turned public park is arguably Berlin’s most unique green space.

A quirky setting to relax after a day of touring, the runway-turned-walking path offers a surreal experience. Spending an evening here will give visitors one of the best spots in the city to take in a Berlin sunset.

Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain

Party animals look no further! Berlin is world-renowned for its nightlife, and districts like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain offer an array of experiences from underground techno clubs to chilled-out beer gardens.

If you're into electronic music, Berghain is legendary, all be it, nearly impossible to get into. However, venues such as Sisyphos or Tresor offer a more accessible route to enjoying Berlin’s party atmosphere.

Pro Tip: Research the accepted attire at your chosen venue and make sure you know what DJs are playing, as the bouncers will likely ask you as you attempt to get access.

Try Currywurst and other local delicacies

No trip to Berlin is complete without tasting its world-famous street food. Currywurst, - sliced sausage covered in curry ketchup and served with fries - is a must-try for those seeking a traditional German culinary experience.

Other foods that may pique your interest include döner kebab (a local favourite despite its Turkish origins) and Berliner Pfannkuchen, a jam-filled doughnut.

Summary

Berlin is a city of contrasts. Historical landmarks stand beside modern art, and a hectic nightlife coexists amongst tranquil greenspaces.

Whatever your reasons behind a visit to Berlin, there is plenty on offer to leave you satisfied with your stay.
